Wedding Dress History - Western Culture

Weddings performed during and immediately following the Middle Ages were often more than just a union between two people. They could be a union between two families, two businesses or even two countries. Many weddings were more a matter of politics than love, particularly among the nobility and the higher social classes. Brides were therefore expected to dress in a manner that cast their families in the most favorable light, for they were not representing only themselves during the ceremony. Brides from wealthy families often wore rich colors and exclusive fabrics. It was common to see them wearing bold colors and layers of furs, velvet and silk.

The woman to the far right is wearing a typical wedding dress from 1929. Up until the late 1930s, wedding dresses reflected the styles of the day. From that time onward, wedding dresses have traditionally been based on Victorian styles.

Over the centuries, brides continued to dress in a manner befitting their social status—always in the height of fashion, with the richest, boldest materials money could buy. The poorest of brides wore their best church dress on their wedding day. The amount of material a wedding dress contained also was a reflection of the bride's social standing and indicated the extent of the family's wealth to wedding guests. Today, there are wedding dresses available in all price ranges, and Western traditions have loosened up to include a rainbow of colors and variety of lengths, which are now considered acceptable. Women may purchase ready-made gowns, wear a family heirloom, or they may choose to have a dressmaker create one for her. In addition, today many bridal salons have samples of wedding gowns in their stores where the bride selects a certain style and orders one to be made to fit.

Wedding dresses have traditionally been based on the popular styles of the day. For example, in the 1920s, wedding dresses were typically short in the front with a longer train in the back and were worn with cloche-style wedding veils. This tendency to follow current fashions continued until the late 1940s, when it became popular to revert to long, full-skirted designs reminiscent of the Victorian era. Although there has always been a style that dominates the bridal market for a time, and then shifts with the changes in fashion, a growing number of modern brides are not choosing to follow these trends. This is due in large part to non-traditional and non-first-time weddings, and women who are marrying later in life.

Today, Western wedding dresses are usually white, though "wedding white" includes creamy shades such aseggshell, ecru and ivory. Philippa of England was actually the first documented princess in history to wear a white wedding gown during a royal wedding ceremony: she wore a tunic with a cloak in white silk bordered with greysquirrel and ermine).

White did not become a popular option until 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria had worn a white gown for the event so as to incorporate some lace she owned. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published, and many other brides opted for a similar dress in honor of the Queen's choice.

The tradition continues today in the form of a white wedding, though prior to the Victorian era, a bride was married in any color, black being especially popular in Scandinavia. Later, many people assumed that the color white was intended to symbolize virginity, though this had not been the original intention. (It was the color blue that was connected to purity.) The white gown is in fact a symbolic Christening gown. They are a variation of the white surplice worn in the Western Catholic tradition by members of the clergy, church choirs and servers and the gowns worn by girls making their first communion and at theirconfirmation and also by women making religious vows. Jews have gone to great lengths to follow these Western (Judeo-Christian) customs, whilst adhering to the laws of Tzniut. Today, the white dress is normally understood merely as the most traditional and popular choice for weddings.

A Photographer's Job

Wedding season is in full swing for all wedding vendors. During the wedding season, which usually runs from April through October, all wedding vendors are hard at work to ensure that your wedding is all that you expected it to be. I feel as a wedding photographer, we have one of the toughest jobs of all the vendors.

Most people think that all the photographer does is show up the day of the wedding with a BIG expensive camera and take pictures. Well, it might have been that simple during the days of film but when technology moved into the digital age everything changed. During the days of film, the photographer would drop off the film at the lab and return to find prints which had been professionally altered by the lab. Now with the digital age and Adobe Photoshop, the photographer takes the pictures, downloads the images to a computer, manually adjusts each image and sometimes adds artistic effects, backs-up the files, and sends them out to be printed at a professional lab or uploads the images to a website for viewing.

Depending on the number of images taken at the wedding and the number of weddings your photographer does each month, can play a role in how long it will be before you see your proof images. Most photographers I know require 4 to 8 weeks to process images as proofs. And your thinking, why so long? It's because most photographers are taking hundreds and sometimes thousands of pictures at each event and giving each image personal editing attention.

And if you have a photographer who offers photographic products other than just prints, then the photographer's job gets even bigger. Photographers must continually attend professional conventions and trade shows if they wish to stay up to date on all the latest product trends. Because of these changing trends your wedding album will NOT look like your mother's wedding album. In today's market, some professional photographers are adding custom designed storybook albums to their list of products. A custom designed storybook album is a one of a kind wedding album which is designed just for you. This is usually a 10 week process for the design, print and binding of the album. So now the photographer has switched hats... he/she is now an album designer. In addition to albums, most photographers offer a variety of products such as canvas gallery wraps, metal prints, DVD slide shows, photographic CDs, custom cards, novelty products and more.

So as you can see a photographers job is much more than just taking a picture.

A Bridal Show Weekend

WOW!... last weekend was a hugh success! Two bridal shows in one weekend... I talked so much that on Monday I really didn't want to talk at all. If you know me, you know that I'm not a "Chatty Patty" type person so doing two bridal shows back to back really put a strain on my vocal cords. I met so many sweet brides and grooms... some even made the decision to hire me the day of the show! Even after the show I have continued to meet with potential clients. I am looking forward to working with everyone who has put their trust in me to the capture the memories of their wedding day. My pledge to you is that I promise not to add to the stress of the wedding day and that you will be satisfied with my performance as a photographer and the products you receive.

Just Blogging

I hope everyone had a great time for Christmas. My family and I had a traditional Christmas get together on Christmas Eve with all the traditional foods and gift giving... as usual my niece, nephews, and my children got more than they needed. Christmas morning isn't as exciting as years gone by since my children are now in their upper teens and twenties. I miss putting out cookies and milk for Santa and the trips to the mall to sit on Santa's lap. My family got back together Christmas evening for a non-traditional meal of grilled steaks, baked potatoes, and salads then we played Domino's until late in the night. We all had great time being together!

JUST FOR FUN

Congratulations to the Surgoinsville Middle School Eagles for winning the football state championship in their division. And you're wondering what a wedding photographer is doing photographing a football game... well the truth is that my brother is the head coach and my nephew plays on the team. I must say that photographing action like this has given me a new appreciation for sports photographers.

Designing Storybook Albums

Well I've spent most of the weekend designing Fine Art Storybook Albums. This is a lot of fun considering I spent 17 years working as a graphic artist for a local Fortune 500 company. I've even designed yearbooks for area Elementary and Middle Schools and overseen the production/sell of the yearbooks. This gave me great pleasure knowing hundreds of students would be looking at my work and keeping it as a keepsake from their school years. As a photographer, when a bride orders a Storybook Album it thrills me because I know I'm going to get to personally design a keepsake. I look at each album as a piece of memorable history which will be passed down to future generations. Photography after all, is recording the present to be shared with the future. I invite you to preserve your memories by purchasing a Fine Art Storybook Album for your memories. (sample album page attached)

Jennifer and Chris' Wedding - June 25,2009

A great time was had by all who attended the wedding of Jennifer and Chris! Jennifer started out planning their wedding for a location here in the Tri-Cities but soon realized that she wasn't being true to her dreams of the perfect wedding. She started looking at websites of beach wedding planners but didn't know any of them and wasn't sure if they were trustworthy. I told her about Heather Kohn of Surfer Girl Chic Weddings in Savannah, Georgia and the rest is history. Jennifer and Chris were married on the beach in Tybee Island, Georgia with family and friends present. The setting made for some great photographic compositions and the laid back atomsphere put everyone at ease.

Lindsi and Steven's Wedding - June 26,2009

Lindsi and Steven's wedding was absolutely beautiful. The setting was at the Oaks Castle here in Johnson City and wedding planner Lisa Tolliver of Posh Productions made sure that every detail was attended to. Lindsi was a stunning bride, kind of like a Bridal Barbie doll, which made it easy to get gorgeous photos of her. And I had previously worked with Steven last summer when he was a groomsman in a friend's wedding so it was a pleasure to get to photograph his wedding.
